Magestic winter flying

by Natalie Kjaergaard

Those days in December when we had snow, I was flying a lot. I love winter with snow and frost, and it is so rare and so little snow we get in Denmark.

Mornings and evenings were often with beautiful freezing fog. I waited for it to disappear, before taking my Aeroprakt out of the hangar.

Still, there were fog banks in some places:

Especially over Lammefjorden, there was a lot. I did a couple of rounds over it, trying to find the best light for my pictures:

I didn’t fly far away from my flying club; in this type of weather one has to be careful – fog can come unexpectedly quickly, and then you might won’t be able to land. It was a cold day, -12C in the morning, up to -8C during mid day, and then -10C in the evening. I took breaks, for coffee and lunch, and did 5 flights that day. On one of the flights, when the skies were most clear, I reached Hillerød and took some pictures of the Frederiksborg Castle:

The Aviator was flying with me, and he loved the scenery:

Somewhere in North Zealand:

I also went for the sunset flight – I had to enjoy it from air:

After the sunset, the horizon got that wonderful pink-blue colour:

I could hear my club mates on the radio reporting landings, but I didn’t worry about pushing my OY-9797 into the hangar. I knew, there wouldn’t be more than 30 litres of fuel left when I land – i.e. I would be able to do it alone.

I succeeded getting it into the hangar, though it wasn’t easy due to snow. At some point I even began considering who to call to beg for help!

It was getting dark, and the skies in the west turned magestic golden:

One more beautiful day of life was going to an end…
