Ice, snow, and a landslide

by Natalie Kjaergaard

Sometimes you are just lucky – the weather is perfect AND you can go flying!

I invited a friend for a flight, and she helped me to pull my Aeroprakt out of the hangar. We decided to fly to Møns Klint, to see the cliff’s landslide that happened in the beginning of January.

We didn’t talk much when we got airborne – just enjoyed the views of those snowy landscapes from air:

On the ground, the wind was around 7 knots, but at 2,000 feet it was 30-35 knots, no gusts though. We had tailwind on our way south, and I noted we would need extra time to get back home…

The sea around Møns Klint had interesting greenish colour, and the landslide was well-visible:

The part at Sommerspiret had collapsed and created a landslide of 380 meters in width and 175 meters into the sea in front of the Sommerspiret. Chalk, sand and trees, as well as parts of the path had slid down. It is the biggest slide on the cliff since Store Taler slid into the sea in 2007.

In addition to the large landslide at Sommerspiret, there was also a smaller landslide at Forchhammer’s Pynt. The Pynt is gone now, so are the path and railing. The entire beach is blocked, as it is unsafe to walk there.

Sommerspiret and Forchhammer’s Pynt were the iconic places on Møns Klint. They were good vantage points to experience the beautiful cliff.

After a couple of rounds, we flew further over the island of Møn, and adored its snowy landscapes:

The picture below is partly manipulated. My friend didn’t want pictures of her to be published, and I respected that. So on the left side, I just added a picture of the Aviator, from one of my previous flights:

The sun was getting down, and with the headwind of 35 knots we headed directly back to Holbæk.

Beautiful ice formations in Præstø fjord:

The sunset was very peaceful. We waited for it in the air and enjoyed the stunning views:

The air was clean and cold, and after 2.5 hours of flying we were freezing 🙂

After landing, I decided it was about time to wash the fairings.

It was such a pleasure to put my hands into the backet of warm water! 🙂

It was an enjoyable flight. We took so many pictures of frozen lakes, ice and snow!
