The joy of flight

by Natalie Kjaergaard

When Gitana, my colleague from Lithuania, told me she was going to visit us in Denmark, I asked her whether she had a fear of heights. She didn’t. In fact, Gitana loved all kind of adventure activities, preferably high on adrenaline. Well, flying an ultralight aircraft is not exactly a Formula 1 kind of experience, but I thought she would enjoy a flight in this beautiful spring weather, and I invited Gitana to Kræmmersten.

Vagn welcomed us to the airfield. We began from quickly taking some measurements – I promised to sew a canopy cover for his Rans S6. Gitana was hanging around, taking pictures, and soaking in the delightful atmosphere of Kræmmersten.

Then I changed to more practical clothes, and pulled Vagn’s aeroplane out:

Gitana was ready for the flight:

Before going flying, we had some tea and delicious dark Lithuanian chocolate I love so much, Gitana brought for us. We were sitting for a while in our club house, looking at the maps, talking about our lives, laughing, having a great time together:

And soon Gitana and Vagn prepared everything for the flight:

They took off, and I knew Vagn would take Gitana around and show her the breathtaking beauty of Denmark from air:

While they were enjoying the day, I had some work to do: tried to fix Vagn’s mom’ sewing machine. It didn’t want to function properly.

There were visiting guests, of course: Boye and Thorkild that came by. After a short chat they took off again. Who wanted to be on the ground in that lovely weather, after all?

Later I went back to the airfield, and was sitting there on the grass, waiting for Gitana and Vagn to return. The sun was getting down, and it became slightly cooler. Birds were still singing. Soon I could hear the sound of the Rans’ engine, and saw them coming. They landed nicely:

Both looked very happy. Gitana is often up to something exciting, like an off-road biking or a parachute jump, but it was first time she had a flight in an ultralight aircraft:

I also went for a flight with Vagn, for a short one. It is such a great feeling – as soon as you are airborne, you forget everything and just enjoy the present moment, always:

Before leaving, Gitana and I had a photo of us taken. We wanted to memorise this day spent together:

We drove to Holbæk where we had dinner in one of the restaurants in the harbour, and we both agreed we should have more days like this one in the future. We also sent our warm thoughts to Vagn, who gave us these wonderful experiences.
