Sunrise over Copenhagen

by Natalie Kjaergaard

I waited for this morning for a long time… To experience the sunrise over Copenhagen was number one on my wishlist.

When I got up at 4 a.m. and checked the weather forecast I couldn’t believe my eyes: it was perfect! Several mornings I got up that early when I thought I had a chance for a sunrise flight – and every time I had to cancel my plans. Several other mornings I was in my flying club at 6 a.m. and later had to cancel my plans due to fog or mist.

At 06:15 we met at the flying club with Henrik, who joined me for this tour. The sky was deep blue with lots of stars on: new moon tomorrow. A morning before a flight could not be better. We prepared the aircraft and waited patiently for the sunrise. The idea was to take off during the civil twilight and to experience from air the sun rising up. Unfortunately we had to wait longer, as the air was cold, and so was the aircraft. The dew on the windows wouldn’t go away…

The take off surpassed my expectations – it was wonderful to see the wake-up of the day.

We got permission to enter Kastrup control zone and followed the Ellehammer VFR route over Copenhagen.

Henrik and I took hundreds of photos during this short tour so beautiful it was.

The sunlight reflecting in a propeller blade:

Langebro:

Copenhagen Stock Exchange, Christiansborg Palace, National Bank, Kongens Nytorv…

Frederiks Church, Amalienborg…

Kastellet…

and a sea plane in the lower left corner:

Marvellous morning! It was quite special to see the sunrise over Copenhagen, and it was definitely not the last time I did it.
