Starry night

by Natalie Kjaergaard

Last week I was sick – caught cold, and stayed in bed with high fever for a couple of days. Corona test was negative, and I recovered surprisingly quickly. All those vaccinations might had had an effect! Going out for a flight even after a short sickness is the greatest award a pilot can have. And when the sun suddenly comes out of the clouds, you need to be ready for that gift.

I missed flying my drone – so I did that first. I knew, it might be dark when I come back:

I also used my drone to take some pictures of the cover for my other website nawico.com – to make better illustrations. Unfortunately, the sunlight was too sharp – it is never easy to take good pictures!

From Holbæk airport, I headed north to Nykøbing Sjælland, Rørvig, and then flew by the northern coast of Zealand. It was so great to be airborne again! I had missed seeing our beautiful planet from above…

Lynæs marina, south of Hundested:

Marinas look so strange and lonely during winter time.  Most boats are in a dry stack storage, and there is not much going on.

I flew further by the northern coast, and enjoyed watching the waves breaking on shore. Eventually, I reached Helsingør, and went for Kronborg Castle sightseeing:

The sun is low at this time of the year, and the light was terrible, so I did several rounds trying to find a good angle.

Kronborg is quite special in its architecture; it’s not just another castle:

Kronborg is immortalized in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, though we others, who visit the island of Mors and explorer its different corners, know a different story of Hamlet. Read more here.

Ferry harbour on the right, taking passengers to Sweden and back on a 20 minutes ride:

I turned back, and flew over wintery landscapes of Zealand. In some areas there was a little snow:

Selfie in the sky:

After flying over Fredensborg and Hillerød Castles, it was time to get closer to home – a sea fog could come unexpectedly quickly, making it dangerous or even impossible to land on my home airfield in Holbæk.

I appreciated some different corners of the Bay of Nexelø:

And did a round over the island of Nexelø:

The northern tip of the island looked like a giant head of a dinosaur:

Visiting Nexelø has been on my wish list long. I’ve been on Sejerø – a nearby island – so many times, but never on Nexelø. Well, no airstrip – that’s the reason! I could take a ferry…

Watching the sunset from air was a majestic experience.

My flight that day, captured by SkyDemon:

In Holbæk airport, the night was coming quickly.

Rising moon was lighting up the skies, and lots of stars began to appear on the night sky. I could recognise many constellations, and a couple of planets. I stood there in the darkness for some time, staring up. What a wonderful day: first you get to admire our beautiful planet from air, and later – the Universe around us…

Kære Natalie!
Godt nytår! Du ser ud til, at være blevet rask. Godt at det ikke var Coronaen.
Flotte billeder!
Er dit fly ikke stillet i hangaren for vinteren?
Med stor flyverhilsen
Erik

Godt Nytår, kære Erik! Tak for de pæne ord! Mit fly overnatter i hangaren, men der er ingen grunde til at det stå stille der, når vejret er flyvende. At flyve om vinteren er så dejligt!
