Blondes airborne

by Natalie Kjaergaard

We met with Anne Mette on the island of Vejrø in June 2018, and stayed in touch since then. Last Saturday we went on a flight together, and were so lucky with the weather: it was around +20C, gentle and caring wind, blue skies; the aircraft’s fuel tanks were full – what more could you wish for?

I hope you noticed the beautiful t-shirt I was wearing. It is a gift from Bjarne Mortensen, a friend of mine from the DaSK, Danish Vintage Glider Club. There is a drawing of a vintage 2G glider on the t-shirt, which you can fly in Arnborg, home airfield of DaSK.

Anne Mette and I wanted to go flying over Kullaberg, a rocky peninsula in Sweden; we both love that place. But when we reached Sweden, a thick and low layer of clouds was covering Kullaberg:

Well, we landed in Höganäs airfield that was just on the edge of the cloud mass. There were many pilots there, and a number of aircraft that came back after a flight. Saab Safir in front of its hangar:

Anne Mette and I had some coffee and enjoyed a delicious double chocolate ice-cream:

We hanged out in the flying club, talked to the pilots, and hoped that the clouds would go away from the area.

I improvised on the piano, and we were having a good time (mostly laughing at my improvisations!):

Eventually we had to give up on Kullaberg. It was probably the first time ever that I visited Höganäs flying club without flying over my favourite place on Earth – Kullaberg. It was a bit disappointing, but the weather prepared a nice surprise for us: there were lots of beautiful circular rainbows on the edge of the cloud mass. We admired the view we had, and flew around for a while, trying to get a decent photo of all those cheerful rainbows.

Anne Mette took this stunning picture somewhere between Sweden and Denmark:

The sun was getting down, and we headed for Denmark. We were very happy that we finally got airborne together, something that was long on our wish list:

We decided to wait for the sunset, and just flew around without talking much, watching the shadows getting longer on the ground, water changing colours, and feeling the air getting more and more smooth. The island of Orø on the photo below. I was going to visit this island the day after, and wanted to see from air some of the places I was going to have experience of:

The sunset was worth waiting for:

It is always such a pleasure to watch a sunset… Just an astronomical event, our planet turning slowly around its orbit, a day goes to an end, and people in different corners of the globe stare at the sun, forgetting everything else…

We waited till the very last moment of it, before we left the Copenhagen Information radio frequency, and flew home to Måløv. At home, the skies were beginning to get darker, and the first stars shined their light on us.
