Our first morning in Torun began from a very late breakfast. The orange juice was served with sparkling wine!
We were first going to fly the day after, and could use the whole day for sightseeing and relaxing. Well, actually that morning started from relaxing time in a bathtub. There was a bathtub in our apartment, and it is always so enjoyable to start a day slowly.
After breakfast, Flemming and I went to see the ruins of the Teutonic knights castle from the 13th – 14th century:
Situated near the border between Poland and the territory of the Teutonic Order, the castle was of a great strategic importance and was therefore heavily fortified. Behind the high wall surrounding the main castle there was a multi-storey building containing a chapel, a refectory, and the knights’ living quarters. The underground vaults of the castle were used as storage space for food supplies necessary in the case of a siege. Water was supplied by the castle well. In order to avoid contaminating the well, a special tower called Gdanisko was built outside the inner wall, which served both as a toilet and a point from which the castle gates could be defended.
The Toruń castle has never been conquered by invaders. However, it was destroyed by its closest neighbors – the townsfolk of the Old Town of Torun, who besieged the fortress at the beginning of February 1545.
The ruins site is relatively small, but an important part of the Torun history.
There were fruit stalls everywhere in the town, and we bought too much – but the fruit and berries were so fresh, it was really a plesure to eat them. I got permission to take pictures:
It was nice to stay in the middle of the old town. We could go home and have a break, prepare for the next day flight, and go out again. Flemming tried to talk to the local ladies:
And one could wander through the sreets of Torun for many hours…
I had to take Flemming to The Leaning Tower – to check how sinful he is. The top of the tower is displaced 1.5 m from where it would be if the tower were perfectly vertical. A story goes, those who have sinned are not able to keep their balance under the tower. You can see the proof:
Flemming had many good excuses – that his boobs were bigger than mine, that he was much taller than me, and so on. The dispute was settled over the ice-cream:

In the evening, we went for dinner to the first restaurant on our way – and what a wondeful surprise it was!
They served gourmet food and very nice wines.
It was a warm summer evening, around +32C, and we enjoyed it very much.
