Vejrø island

by Natalie Kjaergaard

Last weekend Vagn and I wanted to go somewhere to enjoy the mild September weather.

Check of the weather forecast at 6 a.m. on a Sunday morning ruined our plan to fly to Germany, and we decided to go to the island of Vejrø instead of – if we could. We waited till the fog disappeared, and took off.

The air was a bit misty, but we could maintain VFR flight. Soon we reached Vejrø.

The runway on Vejrø is really good. It’s even, and well-maintained.

Happy pilot and his beautiful Rans 6. I like the aircraft very much. If they were manufactured in Europe, I’d have bought one.

Vejrø is a privately owned island, and we were the only aircraft on that day. There is no public transport to Vejrø, and most of the time you can simply have this idyllic place for yourself.

There are lots of wild blackberry bushes on the island, and we had to check them out on our way to the restaurant.

The restaurant Skipperly is a marvellous place known for its gourmet food. It is stylishly furnished and has a real rural charm. The lobster bisque we ordered was delicious.

After lunch we took the bikes and went for a tour around the island. First – harbour. The season is over, but there were some boats visiting:

Then the lighthouse:

We met one or another God on our way (I think it was a blessing!):

I love visiting old cemeteries. All these people that were there before us… The cemetery on Vejrø was established in the end of 19th century, and closed in 1983. It has 24 graves. It was difficult to read the text on the remains of the gravestones, but we could get the information from the material placed in front of the entrance. Vagn noticed, a lady called “Vagna” was buried there (yellow arrow on the photo below). That was the only info, no last name, no birth/death dates… We went to see her last mark on this planet:

We continued to the beach.

The mushrooms of Vejrø… They were gigantic – about 25 cm tall, and with caps of 10-20 cm in diameter.

Off-road biking on Vejrø was quite hard. We didn’t expect that.

Siesta at the piggery:

At one place on the island there was an alley of butterflies. There were hundreds of them. Unfortunately it was impossible to take a picture – somehow they new I was trying to do that, and they didn’t want to be pictured. I managed to get one though:

The island is 2.6 km long and 700 m wide. We biked 7 km in 2 hours, with stops here and there, to enjoy the views, to watch pheasants running around in large flocks, hare resting in the afternoon sun, white-tailed deer…

When we got back to Skipperly, I needed a rest.

Coffee and cakes, as we listened to the thunderstorms nearby.

It was time to leave this tranquil place.

Interesting clouds were waiting ahead of us:

Some of them brought rain:

We reached Kræmmersten, Vagn’s home airfield, and landed before the rain came. Vagn did a very nice and a very short circling approach landing  – I wish I can do it in the same way one day. Kræmmersten has 4 runways, and none of them is easy…

Delightful day, with awesome experiences we will remember.
