We left our house in Siófok late afternoon. It had been raining all night… Our taxi was late… I was nervous that we wouldn’t be able to fly, and Flemming tried to entertain me under the rain:
We had agreed to fly to Fertőszentmiklós, a very small town in the northwest corner of Hungary, where we booked a room in a Castle Hotel Szidonia. There were rains and thunderstorms everywhere… We used a number of hours both the evening before, and in the morning, and we believed there would be a window between the bad weather in the direction of our flight.
In the Siófok airport, the local pilots didn’t believe in our luck, but they were there for us, which we appreciated. Flemming and I monitored the weather development, and we were ready to take the chance.
The rain stopped, and we took off.
The weather in our direction of flight was becoming better and better (but we knew, another wave of thunderstorms was moving towards us).
The flight was short, about one hour, or maybe even less.
When we reached Fertőszentmiklós, it was raining close to the airport (you can see the long asphalt runway below):
We refuelled after landing, with the view to those furious clouds:
Our jaws dropped, when a pilot from the flying club showed us our hangar place. There was one ultralight, but the rest were very prescious vintage aeroplanes:
We took many pictures of them, and one of me, trying to copy the posture of a girl painted on the Stearman:
Flemming got a car from the airport, and we headed for our castle, that was 5 km south of Fertőszentmiklós.
When we got closer, we first noticed a charming old church, and then – what a nice surprise – a stork nest on top of a utility pole (red arrow points at):
And there was a baby in the nest! We couldn’t believe our eyes! Flemming and I couldn’t remember either, when we last time saw a stork nest with a baby stork in!
After we got enough of pictures and admiring of the stork family, we finally continued to the castle, that was just behind the church.
Our room was lovely and spacious:
And with a rose garden view:
The hotel was so beautiful… There was a big spa area, with large swimming pool, different saunas, mineral water from the source… We spent several hours there, relaxing and enjoying the facilities:
Gourmet food in the hotel’s restaurant for dinner:
Flemming and I loved their wine (from their own vineyards), and bought a bottle to bring back home – that was the only thing we brought with us from the tour.
The more we saw of the hotel and its facilities, the more we experienced their excellent service, the more we wanted to stay longer.
We had only booked one night, but the weather was unstable, and after some considerations (or more likely – we just couldn’t resist) we decided to prolong our stay with a couple of more nights. We didn’t want to leave that luxury at all!
