Schwerin was a charming town. The house, I’m standing by, was from 1698! Flemming took that photo to illustrate, how low the floors were in the buildings of that time:
In Germany, bakeries normally serve very good breakfast. That was also the case in Schwerin. We found one where we could sit outside, and with the view to the 117 m high tower of the Schwerin Cathedral, but after 5 minutes we moved inside. It was +23C and felt cold for us, after a month in +35C or higher.
After breakfast which was probably a brunch, we went to see the Cathedral.
It looked surprisingly simple. The first cathedral was built of timber, and the foundation stone was laid in 1172. The Cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. John.
Interesting place we discovered on the streets of Schwerin. Do you think it is grass? No. It is green glass from bottles – probably therefore nobody wanted to sit there?
On the old market square, there is a lion sculpture that commemorates the founder of Schwerin, Heinrich the Lion. The sculpture was erected in 1995 on the eve of the 800th anniversary of the death of the city father:
The Schwerin Castle was very impressive. Built in the 14th century, today it is the seat of parliament. The Castle has 635 rooms!
Wandering around its beautiful gardens, we saw a sundial with the figure of Jupiter sitting on a throne on top of it:
It was a beautiful place to go for a walk, castle in excellent condition, flowers, views…
The town of Schwerin was also very nice, and we enjoyed walking around.
A golden lion is often a symbol of strength, power, royalty. In the old days it was sometimes used on financial institutions. But a golden lion with a German kringle? It was on a nice discret bulding without any identification signs. A baker who earned a fortune on his kringles and opened a trading fund? Any ideas?
In the evening, Flemming and I wanted to go for dinner to one or another good German restaurant.
We settled for a fish restaurant, where we had a bottle of German wine with a funny name Schnick-Schnack-Schnuck. I liked it, Flemming didn’t 🙂
We celebrated our last night of the flying summer vacation.
