Flemming and I loved our slow mornings in Hamburg. We would find a nice spot in one of its cafes, have our breakfast and a talk. At home, most of the time I eat in front of my computer, even at work. So it was good with a break like that.
We walked to the City Hall square where the grand building of the City Hall gathers so many admireres. It was built in 1886-1897, after the old one was destroyed in the great fire of 1842.
By its foot, a police orchestra played –Â the music was so cheering that people were dancing. So did we!
The City Hall is one of the few completely preserved buildings in Hamburg. It is quite big, with a total area of 17,000 m2. The Buckingham Palace is 5,400 m2 – and it has more rooms, but obviously they are much much smaller.
The courtyard is decorated with a Hygieia fountain. We learned that Hygieia is the goddess of health and hygiene in Greek mythology and its surrounding figures represent the power and pureness of the water.
The fountain was built in remembrance of the cholera epidemic in 1892, but the former technical purpose was air cooling in the city hall.
The promenades of the Kleine Alster channel were lined up with cafes and restaurants, and I spotted sign “chocolate” there:
The hot chocolate was ok, made of real chocolate at least. We could stretch our tired legs and have a break in a shadowed terrasse.
Flemming and I were going home that day, but didn’t have to hurry up. We revisited the harbour and waived goodbye to those many vessels that made their way to Hamburg in connection with the Port anniversary celebrations.
An easy train ride and a taxi – and we were back in Uetersen airport. Many guests were having a good time there – having a meal in a restraurant or outside, watching the airplanes flying or having a sightseeing flight. During our stay in Hamburg, we were surprised by how many sightseeing flghts there were over Hamburg, in small GA airplanes. If it was in Copenhagen, there would be complains over noise and pollution – whilst there are not that many complains over wild street parties like Distortion wth people peeing and vomiting on the streets.
Flemming said, he had to have a wurst. He dreamed of a big fat one, but got a smaller version – and was happy:
Whilst Flemming was enjoying his wurst, I prepared and sent our flight plan.
We did the pre-flight check. The cockpit of my OY-9797 was facing south and it was really good with the canopy cover. We removed it before boarding, and the cockpit was still cool.
Leaving Uetersen, I thanked the airport for its hospitality. We were welcomed to come back.
Flying home, we were lucky to have many beautiful cloud formations on the way:
Flemming and I took hundreds of pictures, constantly saing to each other “look at this”, “look at that” 🙂
It was a quite pleasant way to finish our trip to Hamburg.
At home, the rapeseed fields were still in the full bloom. My home flying club on landing:

It was a great trip we had to Hamburg, with many delightful experiences.
