Summer vacation in Sweden, July 2020. Day 2: Mohed & Mellansel

by Natalie Kjaergaard

Morning in Köping began early: some members were going for a flight, others wanted to practice touch-and-goes, or just look after their beautiful flying machines:

I had coffee on the terrace and watched them flying:

Flemming still had his beauty sleep:

Our first leg that day was going to Mohed:

It was an easy, but a bit turbulent flight over the magnificent forests and hills:

In Mohed, Pelle was already waiting by the fuel station, and we were quickly finished with that:

I prepared and sent a flight plan:

And we enjoyed fika on the patio:

From Mohed, we headed for Mellansel. We knew it would be turbulent over the hills, and therefore we had planned our route by the coast:

The views were breathtaking:

All those amazing fjords:

We couldn’t get enough of it:

Mellansel flying club was in the valley, and I thought I made I good approach:

But I soon realised my approach wasn’t that good. The mountains were too high and too close… A couple of adjustments, and we landed safely. The runway is on the left side, highlighted in yellow:

Max welcomed us to the club, and helped with refuelling:

From the first moment of being in Mellansel, I loved that place. The airfield was surrounded by forests and mountains, birds were singing somewhere in the background, and the silence was so calming! Next day we wanted to reach Piteå (though I’d rather stayed in Mellansel for a couple of days!), a town approx. 1600 km north from Holbæk where we started our journey. But the weather was going to be terrible, and we needed to find the right way to deal with that. The flying club had a simple and spacious wooden house. We got our coffee, and went into the planning mode (instead of enjoying the nature!):

After a couple of hours, exhausted, we gave up. All weather sites gave different forecasts, heavy rains and thunderstorms were expected all the way to Piteå… We decided to leave very early, and to take it from there.

Meanwhile, outside there was life. Pilots were coming from work, taking their aeroplanes out, and flying. The sunset was around 11 p.m., and there was plenty of time:

Max also took his own out, and went for a coffee somewhere:

It was a wonderful evening… Flemming and I stayed over in the club house, and prepared for an early departure.
