Before leaving Torun, we refuelled with the help of our portable rubber fuel bags:
It was going to be a hot day, and our final destination was Frantiskovy Lazne in the western corner of Chechia – around 350 nautical miles by air. Flemming and I wanted to have a stop somewhere in the middle, to refuel and to have a break. It wasn’t easy to find a suitable airport. Many turned out to be closed down, others didn’t have fuel, and so on. Finally, we did got in contact with the Lubin airport, where they confirmed, we could land and refuel UL91.
On the way to Lubin, we enjoyed the beautiful views of the Polish countyside:
Closer to Lubin, we spotted several mines:
Lubin represents one of the largest copper and silver reserve in Poland. The corporate offices of the mining companies:
Lubin airport has three rrunways (one for emergency only). The asphalt one was closed for renovation, so we landed on the grass runway:
The airport seemed to be empty, but we kept taxiing around, and soon met other pilots.
Several of those gorgeous machines were used for forest fire-fighting. If I understood the Polish correctly, one such aircraft could have 2,000 litres of water onboard:
It showed up, nobody was informed about our arrival, and we couldn’t get any fuel. But the pilots at the airport were very helpful. They called someone, gave me a chance to speak to that person, and half an hour later he came to the airport. The fuel station requires your credit card to be signed up, so that you are able to pay.
After refuelling, Flemming and I had a lunch break, and had our salads outside the club house. We were grateful for the hospitality – as soon as we landed, we were offered good coffee, the pilots from the club were very kind to us.
Our next leg that day was going to bring us to Cheb. The flight was going to be over the mountains of Chechia:
It was a bit turbulent that day, but we managed, and loved the views:
I originally wanted to go to Karlovy Vary, the famous Czech spa town in Bohemia region, but then read somewhere about another spa town, Frantiskovy Lazne, and changed my mind.
We were warmly welcomed to Cheb, coffee was served on the terrace in the club’s finest porcelain:
We had spoken with them the day before, both fuel and hangar were arranged.
A short taxi ride to Frantiskovy Lazne, and we checked in to our hotel. We had booked a big room with a balcony:
Flemming was happy to sit down and to get his legs up:
We had a walk around that nice town before finding a restaurant for dinner:
