Summer 2023 trip. Day 11: The Whitsundays of Croatia

by Natalie Kjaergaard

Flemming and I took an early train from Graz to Weiz airport where our Aeroprakt was waiting for us. Walking by the corn fields, we could spot the red tail of it:

Flemming did the refuelling, and we had our meal on the flying club’s terrace:

Taking off, we flew by Sankt Ruprecht an der Raab town:

Our flight was from Weiz in Austria to Losinj island in Croatia:

Flying in East Europe was much easier – you call e.g. a radar, and they answer “Radar contact, continue according to the plan”. They know where you are, who you are, and where you fly to. No need for all those repetative phrases, or questions like “What is your destination?” etc.

We flew over the mountains of Slovenia:

Appreciated the lovely landscapes on our way:

Croatian mountains were getting higher, as closer to the coastline we were coming:

The views that opened up on approach to Losinj island were stunning:

I called them The Whitsundays of Croatia, because those amazing colours and a myriad of small islands reminded me of flying as a passenger on a sea plane over Whitsundays in Australia – it was at least as beautiful:

We took hundreds of pictures! Afterwards, we looked at them many times 🙂

The Losinj airfield:

Most of the aircraft parked on Losinj had covers on. I regretted, I didn’t bring mine – we had room for it. Flemming and I had basically no clothers with us, and there was plenty of room in the bagage compartment. Next time I will make sure OY-9797 has its cover on!

Whilst Flemming was cleaning our Aeroprakt, I was literally hanging out and on with the local cat:

It was damn hot +38C, but we didn’t complain. Cicadas were jumping around, and I was jumping away from them 🙂 Have a look how big they were:

The airport had a shuttle service, and for 34 euro they brought us to Mali Losinj where Flemming and I were going to stay:

Again, we booked a two-room apartment (red arrow points at) in the heart of the town:

Our apartment was on the first floor, facing the garden, and had a shaded terrace of 20 m2.

For dinner, we went to Baracuda restaurant, one of the best in Mali Losinj:

We chose fish we wanted as a main course:

But had their signature starter first:

Everything was just excellent – food, wine, service, the view to the marina. Flemming and I were also very happy about reaching to Croatia so easily, and the fantastic weather.

After dinner, we went for a stroll. There were many people out, enjoying the nice evening.

We joined the crowd in one of the bars with outdoor sitting, and finished the day with a drink and a live music concert.

Thank you, Randy. The sea food in Croatia was amazing. That’s the benefit of living in a village by the sea…
