Weekend on Ærø island. Camping under the wings

Finally a weekend with good weather – it was about time to stay in a tent, before the autumn brings cold.

Flemming and I quickly packed, and took off Saturday morning for Ærø island. The weather prognosis was “clear sky”, but over the Langeland Belt there were thick clouds – I had to divert and fly a different route:

We looked forward to spend a weekend on Ærø. It is very convinient to camp under the wings of your airplane on Ærø. There is shower, one can make a cup of tea/coffee, there are good bikes, the airport is close to towns with restaurants, supermarkets, shops, museums, marina. There are good beaches…

A round over Ærøskøbing, where Flemming and I stayed on a long weekend in June. The accommodation needs to be booked at least half a year in advance, everything is quickly sold out. Ærøskøbing is a charming town with lots of roses, lovingly grown by its residents:

In the airport, we were welcomed in by the staff, and 2 dogs. One was “on duty”, observing everything happening around. He didn’t want to be touched by strangers.

Another one was a very kind lady, and she loved being cudded under the chin. She had her own chair:

Flemming and I pitched our tents and pumped the matresses up:

Our camping gear is ultralight and everything is of the smallest weight and size, when packed. It is expensive, but gives us more freedom, especially when on a flying tour. Flemming was a bit stubborn in the beginning, and didn’t want to offer that much money. I had to tell him he would be banned from going on a summer tour with me. It worked.

Our tents can easily be in the “overhead compartments” of my Aeroprakt:

Both of us had had a busy working week, and we just wanted to relax and do nothing. We brought a couple of ready-made salads with us, a bottle of wine, chocolate and fruit, and were first going to bike either to Marstal or Ærøskøbing the day after.

On a very short walk around the airport we said hello to some animals. Cows were curious:

Beautiful black cat, resting on a field by the road, didn’t want any company. We respected that and didn’t come close, and he gracefully allowed us to take pictures:

The rest of the day was spent drinking wine, reading Ærø’s newspapers, having dinner, talking and enjoying the views…

The sunset was warm and calm:

And on the other side of the airfield, the full moon was on the rise:

I went to bed. Flemming took his computer up and worked a couple of hours. Silent night was over us.
