Off the beaten path

The sun was shining and the mood was jovial – Flemming and I decided to go for a swim and a gourmet dinner on the island of Vejrø.

A bit of few and scattered puffy clouds on the way:

The flight was quick:

Vejrø is a privately owned island, and one of the smallest in Denmark – 1.5 km2. There is no public transportation to Vejrø, it is quiet and secluded.

We did a round over the island, mostly for the reason of preparing for landing, but also taking pictures from different angles:

Flemming and I headed directly for the white sand beach on the island’s north-western point. On our way, we visited the orangeries where we had a look at gold fish and frogs in a small pond; stopped by the old graveyard and a pig farm. 100 hectares of 155 in island’s total are used for organic farming.

There was almost no wind, and it was so pleasant to be alone on the beach:

The crystal clear water was warm, and we didn’t want to leave it…

Flemming was swimming and searching for the underwater life; I walked on the beach and watched the gentle waves, softly drenching the sand under my feet…

Towards the evening, the air temperature began leisurely decreasing; Flemming and I moved to the Skipperly restaurant,

where we relaxed on a comfortable couch in its lounge before dinner:

Flemming pointed out that the books in the library were not randomly bought on a flee market. They were written by some well-known Danish writers, like Gustav Wied or Ingvald Lieberkind!

Later we sat outside on the restaurant’s terrace with a sea view, and savoured small appetizes. As far as possible, all food is made of the island’s biological produce, based on the “field to fork” concept. And you can taste the difference!

Both Flemming and I love fish, so we went for a turbot with grilled onion, Norway lobster bisque, and new potatoes from Vejrø. Needless to say, it was delicious:

Whilst having dinner, we also enjoyed watching wild animals coming close by: hares playfully jumping around; crowing pheasants running quick and funny, making small steps; deer slowly walking around and curiously looking at us…

Flemming’s panna cotta with rhubarb was so tasty:

After dinner, we went for a walk to the marina, and then – by the coastline to the airstrip, appreciating the pale-blue tranquil sea:

And we occasionally stopped to smell the roses:

Flight back home by the sunset time was colourful and misty:

We had such a lovely day on Vejrø! It is one of those islands where you get the best of everything – unspoiled nature, wonderful beach, gourmet food, time to relax and contemplate. It was just what we needed that day.
