Læsø island. Day 2: Visiting Hornfiskrøn – the nature gem of Læsø

by Natalie Kjaergaard

Friday morning was warm and sunny, with small clouds that quickly disappeared in the heat. Flemming and I walked to the Østerby harbour to have breakfast on the dock.

Local supermarket had decent and cheap coffee to-go, good freshly baked bread, and we were ready for the new day.

Flying over Læsø the day before, we wandered whether we could make it to Hornfiskrøn this time:

Hornfiskrøn is one of the four islands called Rønnerne, protected nature area south of Læsø.

There are 2-hour-long guided tours to Hornfiskrøn by a tractor-bus, called Rønnerbus. We hadn’t booked any tickets, just popped up at the departure place, and were lucky to come on. Since the beginning in the 1970s, the Rønnerbus has transported nature lovers through Læsø’s beautiful nature – the first years in a horse-drawn carriage, and since approx. 1980 with tractor and wagon as it is known today.

Our driver and the guide was Thomas, a resident of the island, and he knew so much about Hornfiskrøn! It was a very interesting excursion, we recommend taking it.

There was also time to walk around, and to admire our wonderful planet.

Læsø has a number of large rocks here and there; 16 of them can be found on Rønnerne (there are maps available showing locations of those rocks). By one of them:

And another one on our way back:

After the Hornfiskrøn tour, we visited Læsø Saltsyderi (English: Saltworks). I have written several blogposts about Læsø Saltsyderi (and other interesting places on the island), don’t want to repeat myself. You can see pictures and read them here, here and here 🙂

It was a hot summer day again, and we decided to go for a short swim before dinner.

Flemming and I got our towels and went to the nearest beach. It is always so wonderfully refreshing, to get into the water!

Earlier that day, when we had breakfast in Østerby harbour, we had a look at the town’s restaurants, and thought we’d go for dinner to the one called “Læsø Marina Park” – their menu appealed to us. Well, it showed up we were misled! 🙂

Half an hour went by before we got our drinks, 1 hour (!) – before we got our starter which was a lobster bisque:

It tasted ok, but was too salty, and had way too much of either cream or something starch-like. They served butter for the bisque, but forgot to serve bread…

Then 1 hour waiting time more (!), and our main course arrived – grilled lobsters. Look how sloppy they were served:

We of course expressed our feelings during those hours of waiting time, but the personnel didn’t care at all. So we dropped desert, and went for a coffee to “Coffee Head” bar nearby. From its terrace, we had a nice sunset view whilst we sipped our cappuccinos. They played music of a local band that sang Rolling Stones.

“At home”, in our camping site, it was silent, and Flemming worked till it became completely dark.

In general, we were quite happy about our camping site in Østerby. People respected other guests’ privacy, nobody talked loudly, and there were good facilities and friendly atmosphere.
