Home Flying trips Föhr island. Day 1

Föhr island. Day 1

by Natalie Kjaergaard

I long wanted to treat myself with a weekend trip somewhere outside Denmark. I was monitoring the weather, and Friday morning I was on my way to the German island Föhr.

The clouds were so beautiful, I took lots of pictures of them.

The towering Cu on the photo below are fun to fly under – in a glider, not in an ultralight, so I enjoyed their beauty from a safe distance.

Soon Föhr was on the horizon:

Arriving to EDXY was easy. I got RWY20 for landing:

The airfield was founded in 1926, and is one of the oldest places in Schleswig-Holstein. They have an impressive Tower:

And professional services. I got help for refuelling:

Was shown their hangars and around. This propeller is from Consolidated B-24 Liberator from 1943:

This heavy American bomber was shot down over the North Frisian islands on the 13th November 1943. The Consolidated B-24 Liberator was on its way back to Britain when two Messerschmitt Me 109 took off from the island of Sylt. If I understood the story correctly, there were 6 men on board. The body of the captain was found and burried on Amrum (the nearby island), the bodies of the 5 remaining crew members were never found…

As I was going to stay on the island for 3 days, I needed a car. Exploring on a bike was less exciting. The air traffic controller tried to get me a car, but it wasn’t possible – everything was rented out. It showed up I could rent an electric car right from the airfield. I said “yes”.

When I saw the car, I was so happy! It was simply the cutest car I could get! In this car I got lots of attention on the roads! Before I left for my adventure, I wanted to be photographed. You never know whether you come back…

The rest of the day was spent in a farm where I stayed, with chickens, sheep, flower gardens…
