Flying trike in the moonlight

by Natalie Kjaergaard

I long wanted to have a flight in a trike together with Henrik – it has been a long time. Yesterday evening the right chance came. We met in Henrik’s home airfield in the Northern Zealand, and began from having a dinner with the view:

Henrik and I wanted to see the sunset from air, and we had plenty of time till then. Deer were running around, gracefully jumping and playing in the corn field; a big common buzzard was hunting close to us; it was a lovely afternoon in the sunshine.

Henrik prepared his trike for the flight:

After he did the engine test, I tried to sit there alone. I admit, it was much more comfortable:

We got ready. Before the take-off:

After flying a bit around, we decided to land in Annisse. The yellow stippled line is the runway:

Henrik wanted to have a chat with Helvig, the owner of the airfield.

Helvig came in one of his machines:

We had some fun in his garden, attempting to play with a small axe:

Helvig is a former pilot with many years of experience. For not so long time ago he went on a trike flight with Henrik – brave man!

It looked like the sun was getting down, and we taxied to the runway:

When airborne, we saw that the sun disappeared behind the clouds… We had noticed those clouds earlier, but hoped they’d go away. They didn’t. Well, c’est la vie, we enjoyed the flight anyway, and continued.

There was raining out there on the horizon, and we didn’t expect any miracles.

In 2,000 feet there was a wind of about 25 kn – that was quite surprising. On the ground there was max 5 kn. We were circling around, taking pictures:

And what a stunning view awaited us when we turned back to west:

The sun came out, and for a short moment gave us a fantastic glimpse! I quickly reached to my mobile phone, and shoot around 100 pictures. And soon all that glory was gone…

We flew back home, and another surprise was on the skies! The big reddish full moon was raising… I tried to take pictures, but they turned out to be very poor, compare to what we saw… We had to land, it was getting dark…

The Aviator (the yellow arrow points at) went flying with us. He got a comfortable place in front, and didn’t wear his sunglasses during the flight. The yellow stippled line is the runway (200 metres?):

Wow! What a wonderful flight we had! Life was full of joy again!

I was wearing my white winter gloves – a Christmas present from my friend Vagn a couple of years ago. There we very good for the occasion!

On the ground, the moon was just beginning to rise over the horizon. It was pale pink now (see yellow arrow):

Whilst Henrik got his trike to the hangar, I prepared the tea. The moon was gradually changing colour to yellow:

We sad there till it became completely dark, drinking tea, enjoying the magnificent view, and feeling so grateful for this amazing flight that brought not only the sunset, but also the moonrise…
