Dronningesmøgen

by Natalie Kjaergaard

On my last tour to Endelave I discovered a place called Dronningesmøgen (could be translated as The Queen’s cigarette).

I took off from my home airfield in Måløv, and headed straight to the island. The days are getting shorter, and if you want to get more out of the (rare) sunlight, you need to prioritise your time. Soon I could see Endelave:

Left base to runway 11:

On final to runway 11:

When I landed, the owner of this irresistible Piper Cub from Germany was waving to me. And then he quickly left on a bike tour:

I went to get a bike as well. Endelave airfield is quite good for self-service. Everything is ready, easy, convenient.

There are lots of bikes. This is “my” department – bikes for kids (suit my XS size):

I chose one, and went to the village. Nice church and a cemetery on the sea side:

I went to the harbour where I enjoyed my home-made sandwich al fresco:

Then I continued, and stopped at any corner I found interesting. Home made jams, marinated cucumbers:

I love these old timbered houses:

Flowers and small gifts:

I thought the residents were used to the gazing tourists, but I noticed some were turning their heads on me when I was photographing. Beautiful house:

In some gardens there were creative decorations:

A replica of The Little Mermaid?

Coming by one of the houses, I noticed a painting on the wall. I initially continued my cycling, but then decided to turn back. It took me some time to understand the whole meaning. Blue arrow: painting on the wall (a queen?). Red arrow: a photo of The Queen of Denmark Margrethe II. After I saw the date on the photo, I got it. When The Queen of Denmark visited Endelave in 2012, she had a cigarette in front of this painting. Green arrow: the place was given a name “Dronningesmøgen” (The Queen’s cigarette”). The simple chair The Queen was sitting in, is still there (not on the photo).

So many interesting things and places one can discover! My cycling tour logged with Suunto Traverse. I managed 8 km:

Leaving Endelave, I promised myself to come back for a weekend, and to explore this wonderful island slowly. On the photo below is Endelave By and the harbour:

Correction: I visited Endelave again later, and went to see Dronningesmøgen. I think my interpretation was wrong, because The Queen doesn’t smoke on the photo. And “smøge” can also be translated as a narrow space/walk between the houses which I think is the case there. But – I’ll keep the story 🙂
