Conquering Sønderbjerg

by Natalie Kjaergaard

Early morning, there was still fog in many places:

Flemming and I were going from Roskilde to Anholt. I had never tried to fly to Anholt direct; myself I would rearly take that chance – to fly over the vast waters without having gliding distance:

But I felt comfortable – trusted both the pilot in command and his aircraft 🙂  And with 130 kt/hour it goes quickly!

You can see the airstrip of Anholt somewhat in the middle:

Before landing, we curcumnavigated the island. Anholt marina from air:

I have so many good memories from visiting Anholt! Last year I even walked the island around – 26 km! It was tough to walk in the sand, but such a great experience.

The lighthouse, which is also an interesting landmark to visit:

Totten – the easternmost tip of Anholt – is favoured by seals. The place is closed for pubic, but sometimes one can see hundreds of seals there from the lighthouse or from above.

A selfie in the air:

And landing on runway 21. The yellow arrow on the photo below points at Sønderbjerg (Southern mountain). I had agreed with Flemming, we’d climb it:

We took a path through the desert, and there was also a path towards the hill’s top:

In a couple of minutes we were standing on the summit. Sønderbjerg is 48 m high, and the views were spectacular:

Flemming and I chose to walk to the Anholt marina by the west coast with its 20 meters high dunes, covered in bushes of juniper and different types of coniferous trees. It smelled so nice!

The Aviator loved it, too.

The beaches of Anholt are majestic:

Soon we reached marina, and stopped to appreciate the life at sea:

It was time to have lunch, and we got a sunny spot at “Algot fra havet” restaurant. The food we ordered was good, and it was nice to sit on the sunny terrace. I wouldn’t recommend to use their WC – it was increadibly dirty! Used paper all over the floor, no soap!!! I was happy I had my hand disinfectant with me.

There was a new eatery in the marina, opened this year, called Den Gamle Oliegrund. It was a trendy place, with roof terrace and lots of customers. They served drinks, beer, fish & chips, coffees, and they also had Kastberg’s gourmet ice cream – I had to have that delicious ice cream! We regretted we didn’t come there from the begining:

Walking back to the airfield, Flemming and I enjoyed the views of stunning landscapes of Anholt:

A short stop by the church that was opened. It was first time I was so lucky to get inside:

The church is not big, and there was a small organ in the corner – I’ve never seen such a small one before. Would be insteresting to hear one day how it sounds:

Back at the airfield, there were many aeroplanes:

We took off, and admired all those beautiful views.

On final to runway 11 in Roskilde:

Paperwork in the hangar before going home:

When Flemming was finished, we talked about our experiences of the day. One more wonderful day of life. Many thanks to Flemming!
