Henrik and I had planned to have a vacation together during the Ascension holidays. As it is always the weather that determines destination, we waited with that. On the day of our departure it looked like the only place we could fly to was Bornholm – and we happily headed to the island.
We rented a house on the northern Bornholm, somewhere between the Hammershus Castle and the Hammer harbour:
From that location we could see the magnificent sunsets, but preferred to walk down to the harbour or even climb up the cliffs where I often flew my drone:
Our intention wasn’t to stay on Bornholm all the time, but to fly around Denmark. However, the weather decided otherwise. We even couldn’t fly home after the first week, and were lucky to be able to prolong both the house and the car one week longer – Bornholm is normally booked long in advance. In fact, Bornholm was the only place in Denmark with good sunny weather every single day. We only had rain one day, and it was short. Bornholm is often called the sunshine island – and this time I understood why.
It is difficult to say what was best during this visit. Everything! Henrik and I tried to find new places, we hadn’t seen before – and it was relatively easy; Bornholm has a lot to offer. One of the interesting things is that Bornholm is located at a geographic junction – the intersect of latitude 55N and longitude 15E. We visited the granite stone that marks the spot, and learned about the Gudhjem Time:
We did many various activities – hiking, museums, lecture, good food, swimming, drone flying and my aircraft flying, visited the islands of Christiansø and Frederiksø, went sailing along the coast:
There were lots of flowers everywhere – trees, bushes, and we loved that wonderful time of the year:
We were also lucky that my friend Lars was on the island; Lars helped us with refuelling, and we also spent 2 nice evenings together:
The month of May this year was a cold one. I’ve read, it was the second coldest during past 100 years. Though it was sunny on Bornholm, I was wearing my wool fingerless mittens till the very last day there – 29th May! The photo below was taken on top of the northern Bornholm on our last hike. I bought those mittens last year on Gotland, it’s a nice memory…
We couldn’t come back home on time for me to get back to work, due to bad weather either on Zealand or in Southern Sweden. So I worked from Bornholm. It functioned well, and was almost as comfortable as from home, but was surely disturbing for Henrik. I normally have many meetings during a work day, and though the house we stayed in was big, Henrik couldn’t avoid listening to many of those meetings, because I was working from our dining room.
Henrik and I eventually flew back home, full of great experiences. It was a very nice vacation, longer than expected, but without any negative effects of it, quite the opposite.
At home in Holbæk, the weather had greatly improved. We cleaned the aircraft, and spent some time with our club mates, before leaving.
