As Henrik and I unintentionally stayed one week longer on Bornholm – due to bad weather on Zealand and in Southern Sweden that prevented us from flying home – we had a chance to meet with Lars again. We invited Lars for dinner, and looked forward to spend an evening with a pilot-friend. After I finished my work for the day, Henrik and I had a couple of hours – and we decided to do some sightseeing. I also needed a break with physical activity and fresh air.
We drove to Helligpeder – an idyllic fishing village located on the western coast of the island:
The Helligpeder was mentioned for the first time in 1570. The name has its origin either from a holy spring or single-stone monument in the area. The harbour came into existence when local fishermen built a simple pier. In 1879 they were given a grant to build a granite funded harbour with 2 basins.
There have been 4 smoke houses in Helligpeder, one of which belonging to the oldest ones on Bornholm, built around 1880’s.
The harbour hasn’t changed since then, but has been restored after storm damages. It is no longer used by professional fishermen; today, it is a cosy place for leisure-time fishing and yachting.
And to avoid any doubts, there was a sign “Yes, this is Helligpeder”:

We drove back home, and stopped by the yellow rapeseed fields to appreciate their beauty:
Soon Lars arrived, and we began the evening from a glass of wine:
I happily moved to the kitchen for preparing dinner, also to give my friends room for having a man-talk.
It was so nice to have Lars visiting us!
After dinner, Lars suggested to go see the sunset, and we took him to our favourite place in Hammerhavn (yellow arrow points at) where the remains of a granite quarry from the 19th century still exist:

We didn’t expect to see the sunset, because it was clouded in the west, but then suddenly the sun shed its light on us. It was a very pleasant moment:
Walking back home, we stopped by kayak club in the harbour – and there was time to have some fun:
At home, we had desert and talked about flying, instruments, weather – all these exciting for every pilot topics.
It was a wonderful evening. Though we function very well as friends together with Henrik, spending time with Lars was great for both of us. It is natural to get a little bit tired of seeing the same person every day. We enjoyed Lars’ company!
