Ascension holidays 2021, turned Whitsun… Day 8: Changing (flying) plans

by Natalie Kjaergaard

This is the view from the place where Henrik and I stay on Bornholm:

It isn’t the view from the house we have been renting, but if we walk 100 metres west, we have this beautiful view. We can even watch the sunset from that hill, but we prefer going to the beach, or watch it from the cliffs. And that’s also how the weather has been on the island so far. At home, on the contrary, it has been raining with thunderstorms, so we couldn’t really find a suitable couple of hours to fly home. Then, to avoid all that stress and pressure, we decided to prolong our stay with 1 more week. Now we’ve reached the Whitsun weekend, and our vacation is no longer Ascension… I have my working laptop with me, and going to work from the island next week – isn’t it what all those smart gurus encourage us to do?

We wanted to use our morning for hiking, and took a coastal path towards Hammershus with the intention to see Camel Heads rock formations.

The views were beautiful, it was warm and the walk was very pleasant.

We stopped several times on our way to take pictures of the cliffs, huge rocks, flowers, grazing sheep or sea view.

The Camel Heads looked good (they reminded me of rauka on Gotland), and I decided to take some pictures of them with my drone. We found a good spot on the cliffs where I could start and land the drone; blue arrow points at Henrik, red – at me:

I shoot from different directions and heights, but I wasn’t satisfied with the photos:

It was a bit windy, and I was afraid to fly too close:

After all batteries on the drone were used, we continued further south.

Beneath the cliffs, there was a nice small beach where we had a break:

On Bornholm, it doesn’t matter which way you choose to walk – the nature is so beautiful…

We had a kind of free afternoon – hadn’t decided what we wanted to experience – and agreed to drive to the Østerlars Round Church, the largest on the island:

I’ve seen round churches on Bornholm many times, but never been inside. Now I had the chance! We took the stairs up – they led us to several rafters, with exhibitions and interesting info:

This is how the roof construction looks like from the inside:

It wasn’t very big inside, but special and beautiful. Frescos from the 14th century:

We spent much longer time there than we expected, mostly climbing up and down those 1,000 years old stairs, and walking around staring at things we didn’t imagine existed…

Driving back home, we chose a different road, through the middle of the island, and appreciated the natural beauty of those neon-yellow rapeseed fields:

I spent the evening knitting a vest with aeroplanes for myself:
