Ascension holidays 2021. Day 1: Bornholm is calling

by Natalie Kjaergaard

Henrik told me he could clearly see when I was under pressure whilst airborne – when I didn’t take any pictures. That was the case yesterday, when we took off from Holbæk on our way to the island of Bornholm.

First when we flew over the Kastrup airport of Copenhagen, and I could see it was ok over Sweden, I relaxed and began taking pictures.

However, low clouds over the southern Skåne forced us down from the intended FL55:

It didn’t look exactly the same at the time of our flying (I took this screenshot later), but you get the idea:

It was marginal VFR except Bornholm, and from around 4 p.m. it was going to clear up in the south of Sweden, but only for a couple of hours, and there we had planned our flight. Fortunately, we could fly by the coast, and only after we passed Smygehamn could we begin climbing. We had of course plan B and plan C ready – had taken corona tests that morning, so that we could stay in Sweden if became necessary.

But as close to Bornholm we flew, as better the weather became, and we were very happy. After the nerve wrecking flight over Denmark – will the weather become better or not – it was evident it will:

With flying, you have to book accommodation and car at the very last moment, because you simply cannot always trust the weather forecasts. Henrik managed to find a car for us (they all were rented out), and I – to book a house. We even first paid for the house the day after moving in! That’s where we were going to stay, on the northern tip of Bornholm:

At Bornholm airport after landing:

The car was conveniently parked right by the pilots’ gate – the owner knew we were coming in a private aeroplane. We drove to the supermarket, bought some food and bubbles, and stopped by the Hammerhavn before going “home”:

We were hungry, so quick food first – lasagne for Henrik, and porridge for me. As most of us, we have different tastes but instead of trying to adapt, we do exactly the opposite – eat and drink whatever we prefer. Therefore one bottle of sparkling for Henrik, and another one – for me:

The house was very nice, and bigger than expected. Two bedrooms, a living room, big bathroom, and kitchen with all the utilities one needs.

After dinner, we sat on the sofa and enjoyed a glass of sparkling and a chocolate desert:
