April tour 2019. Day 5: rain…

by Natalie Kjaergaard

On Sunday Vagn and I were supposed to fly to Czech Republic, but the weather decided otherwise. It was raining… According to different weather services, there was a chance that it would clear up late afternoon. We wouldn’t be able to reach Czech Republic, but we would be able to fly to the Eastern Germany from Konstanz, and thus come closer to our next destination. Vagn and I decided to give it a chance, and went to the airport.

There were other pilots in the airport, waiting for their chance to fly, and we just laughed and called us “the optimists’ club”. Nevertheless, we were checking the weather, and discussing our possibilities. It was damn cold, and with Vagn we went for lunch. It wasn’t easy to find a cafe close to the Konstanz airport, we tried a couple on our way, and they were not very interesting. Finally, we ended up in a cafe called Heimathafen. It was a really nice, warm and cosy place. They had good food, too.

We spent a couple of hours there, appreciating their hospitality. Then the weather forecast changed to worse, we gave up, and booked rooms in a hotel in Konstanz, again. Back to the airfield, picked up our bags, and promised Vagn’s aircraft to be back tomorrow.

The hotel – Graf Zeppelin – was cheap, but showed up to be an excellent choice. It was a charming old building (center), well-maintained, and with attentive service.

We dropped our bags, and went to a walk through the old streets of Konstanz, discovering things and places we haven’t yet seen.

Vagn was attracted to some wall art:

Dinner in a Turkish restaurant Sedir was also very good. At least we were lucky with the food that day! This restaurant has a very nice casual atmosphere; it is clearly loved by locals, and was full of people. With SkyDemon and pilot’s champagne (sparkling mineral water):

At the end of the day we felt that the day was wasted (though it wasn’t of course) – because we couldn’t fly. But we knew, the next day the weather was going to be good again; we just needed to accept it and to adjust our plans.
