April tour 2019. Day 18: Pilsen

by Natalie Kjaergaard

The reason we came to Plasy was the annual airshow, but we also wanted to see other things. So we decided to go to Pilsen on Saturday 27th, and to the airshow – on Sunday 28th (the weather seemed to be better there).

I spoke to the local ladies near the supermarket and found out where the train station was. We got there, and were surprised by the station building; it was like a tree house on top of another building of bricks:

Our train arrived; it was very nice and comfortable:

View of Plasy from the train:

It was about 25 km south, and took 40 minutes.

The first thing we noticed when we got to Pilsen, was advertisement for the airshow in Plasy. We said to each other: are we really going to experience all that tomorrow? That just was unbelievably exciting!

Engineering constructions – that’s something for Vagn! He always has to check who things work:

And art – that’s something that attracts me. There was that huge painting on the wall that was inspired by the tradition of figural painting in Pilsen. Famous celebrities of different times connected with the history of Pilsen were painted on an area of more than 200 m2. There was also an aircraft!

A modern style fountain on the Republic Square. I called it “The Golden Dog”, Vagn called it “Pi symbol”:

The beautiful Gothic cathedral of St. Bartholomew with the tallest church spire in the Czech Republic dominates the Pilsen central Square of the Republic. The spire is difficult to photograph:

In another corner of the square we saw a gigantic sculpture of a woman:

The weather was much more warm than we expected, but changing at times to cooler. We walked slowly through the streets, and stopped when we saw something interesting.

For lunch, we went to a restaurant called “Pod divadlem“.  It is a local pub with a large varieties of beers that we didn’t drink, and great food. Vagn had a wild boar, and I – grilled carp with veggies. And for a starter, we tried their sausage – it was also very tasty.

Vagn wanted very much to visit the museum of general Patton. We checked out the opening hours on its website, and got their on time, but the museum was closed for renovation! Vagn couldn’t believe it! He tried all the doors, but they were closed. What a disappointment!

We had no choice but to get back to the town.

After a coffee, smoothies, and ice-cream break we decided to go home to Plasy.

There were many nice buildings on our way to the train station.

On our way to Pilsen I noticed a bicycle hanging on a wire between some trees. It looked so weird! I hoped to get a photo of it on our way back, and I succeeded (blue arrow is pointing at it):

Vagn was sleeping in a train, all way back to Plasy – all that good red wine for lunch… Walking back home by the lake, we noticed this charming wooden sculpture of a fisherman:

And in the grass – a nutria (or otter)! It was eating grass, and didn’t care about people standing around taking pictures of it:

Though we didn’t do anything special, both Vagn and I were tired when we got back home. After dinner, we used lots of time for planning of the next day. Tomorrow we are going to the airshow, and we also going to leave Plasy. The weather looks rather unstable, and we have chosen a couple of possible airfields in Germany as our next stops. Tomorrow we’ll see where we will end up…
